Due to run as Newcastle Race 5 at 3:25pm (AEST), this seasonâs $125,000 Group 3 Yarraman Park Tibbie Stakes (1350m) features 13 hopefuls with markets at Ladbrokes.com.au firmly led by the rails-drawn Fitou ($4.20).
The John OâShea-trained Street Cry mare comes off a Wyong win from September 2 in the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) and with gun Sydney hoop James McDonald retaining the ride, looks a livewire hope of securing another Black-Type win over the distance this Friday.
A further five of her rivals are under double-figures in the Tibbie Stakes betting markets including the early market mover Rocket Commander ($6.50).
Canberraâs Matthew Dale saddles-up the Court Command five-year-old who is also a stakes winner last time out having beaten home Riziz in the Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) on August 20 at Morphettville Parks in Adelaide.
Rocket Commander overcame barrier 13 of 14 and 57kg to win that lead-up and will enjoy a better barrier (four) and drop back to 56kg at set weights plus penalties in the Tibbie Stakes with Blake Shinn riding.
The other best fancied in the Tibbie Stakes odds include the Kris Lees-trained Savoureux ($6) who is out to improve on her dead last (14th) in last Saturdayâs Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill and Gerald Ryanâs Mona Lisa Stakes third placed Snitzel mare La Muse ($9.50).
Sow ill the favourite Fitou salute for the punters or is there an upset Tibbie Stakes result on the agenda this Newcastle Gold Cup Day?
1st
#5 Rocket Commander ($6.50)
Daleâs in-form mare has run top three in her past seven starts going back to April, all in Adelaide, but can more than stack-up at Newcastle this week off that lead-up. Two back she was under two lengths away third in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) before the Penny Edition win over 1400m in the wet. The 1350m looks ideal third-up, she is drawn ideally and is down in weight. Plenty of boxes ticked and the money is coming.
2nd
#4 Replique ($13)
Good odds on offer for the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Kiwi expat who Waterhouse has a big wrap on. Has hints of Waterhouseâs past New Zealand mares who came over and won The Metropolitan and will improve on whatever she does first-up here. Ran top two in her three latest runs back across the Tasman including a Listed win over the mile in February. Has been brought-on fitness wise with two Sydney trials including a 10u30m win ait Rosehill on August 30.
3rd
#2 Fitou ($4.20)
Deserving favourite after the Mona Lisa win on a Heavy (10) track last time out. She is second-up here in her first run at Newcastle, but has plenty of form over the distance range (11-4-1-0) and gets the inside run with McDonald in the saddle again.
